Three Easy Meditation Techniques
Some people may feel that easy
meditation techniques are not worth learning. A good meditation
practice takes time, self discipline and effort they will claim.
They may be right, but before people are ready to make that commitment
they may want to have a little taste of what they might get from
a more serious commitment. So why not start with one of these
easy meditations? You might discover that you want more.
A Basic Mini-Meditation
This one is the easiest and
quickest of the three here. You just need to find a quiet place
and stop any time during your day to take several deep slow breaths
through you nose. Close your eyes while you do this, and to let
the tension drain from your body as you breath deeply.
This just takes a minute, but
do it several times daily. You'll get none of the more profound
effects of deeper meditation, but you'll find it relaxes you
and clears your mind. Choose to think about something encouraging
as you go back to your work, and you'll amplify the latter effect.
Any good thoughts will work. The point is primarily to change
whatever is on your mind, to refocus your attention for the moment,
which reminds you that you can choose where to place you attention.
Simple Breath Watching
Another of these easy meditation
techniques, try this one in any quiet location. It will take
about five to ten minutes. Close your eyes and breath deeply
through your nose while releasing tension from your muscles as
much as possible. Tensing them up and then releasing might help.
Pay attention to your breath,
and after a few deep inhalations, just allow your breathing to
fall into a comfortable and natural pattern. "Watch"
(mentally) the air coming and going from your nostrils, and let
other thoughts fade away.
Other thoughts and images will
come into your consciousness, but simply bring your attention
gently back to your breathing. Do this for about five to ten
minutes, or until your mind settles down and the intruding thoughts
come less frequently. Finally, take a deep breath as you slowly
open your eyes and reorient yourself to your surroundings.
This is a short meditation,
but it can be powerful. It may make things appear a bit different
- fresher or newer perhaps. You might also notice that you are
still you without your thoughts. If you like the effect, this
can be extended into a longer mediation session of course.
Brainwave Entrainment
CDs
Decades ago people noticed
that certain music was conducive to a meditative state. Later
it was discovered that this was due to how the musical beats
affected the brainwaves of listeners. The beats slowed down the
brain wave patterns into the "alpha" state which is
associated with meditation - and also passed through every time
you go into deeper brainwave patterns and finally sleep.
This knowledge was eventually
used to create brainwave entrainment technologies which you can
buy in the form of meditation CDs or MP3 recordings. Of the easy
meditation techniques covered here, this is by far the easiest
to use. Just play the CD with headphones on and it takes you
into a meditative state. Lay down and these CDs will almost certainly
put you to sleep - another use.
Simply listening to a CD? That
has to be the easiest of all meditation techniques.
