Spiritual Humor
Spiritual humor is humor which
prods us to see a spiritual truth. With laughter, the lesson
sinks in more deeply. Here is an example, a story that that points
out how even in matters of the spirit, we have to help ourselves.
Spiritual Humor -
A Story Of Faith
There was a great flood coming
to a small town. The rain had continued for days, and the water
was rising higher and higher. Everyone needed to be evacuated.
One old woman, however, decided
to wait.
The water soon was in her yard,
but she looked at it unconcerned. She had great faith in God,
and knew he wouldn't let her die. When the water was up to the
door of her house, a boat came by, and the driver of the boat
offered to take her to safety.
"Oh, no thank you,"
she told him, "The lord will save me when the time comes."
The water continued to rise,
and was soon filling the house. From a window on the second floor
the woman waved off yet another boat, telling them, "I have
faith in God. He'll save me." They tried to change her mind,
but she refused to go.
As the water filled the second
floor and rose even higher, the woman climbed out onto the roof
of the house. She was sitting there unconcerned when a helicopter
flew in and hovered overhead. A basket was lowered, and over
the loudspeaker she heard a man tell her to climb in. She refused.
"God will save me,"
she yelled up to him, and she sat back down as the helicopter
flew off.
Eventually the water rose above
the roof, and swept her away. She was finally a bit surprised
as the current pulled her under, and she may have even regretted
not accepting the ride in the helicopter. In minutes, she drowned.
Being a good and faithful woman,
she went to heaven, and came before God. She looked at him, and
with anger and confusion, she said, "I had faith in you.
Why didn't you save me?"
"Not save you?" God
asked. "What do you mean? I sent you two boats and a helicopter!"
I hope you enjoyed the story.
I'll try to find more. I'll try to avoid certain jokes, like
the one about the Buddhist monk who asked the owner of the hot
dog stand to "make me one with everything." While funny,
these jokes aren't really spiritual humor.
